CITIZEN DISASTER PREPAREDNESS

The Rotary Club of Nelson County and Nelson County Chamber of Commerce will co-sponsor an Open House on Thursday May 30, 2019 from 3:30pm to 6:30pm at The Nelson Center, 8445 Thomas Nelson Highway, Lovingston, VA. Light refreshments will be provided by Angela McKinney’s State Farm Insurance.

During the open house there will be businesses and organizations to provide information and answer questions to help citizens prepare for a disaster. Some agencies that will be at the event are  Angela McKinney’s State Farm Insurance;  Red Cross; Hitt Enterprises  and Virginia Cooperative Extension.     

At 5:30 pm, Dr. Gary Strong will be speaking on how to prepare for a disaster.

A disaster is not just the result of human exposure to a physical hazard but also the result of vulnerability generated by social processes that do not take into account emergency preparedness. There are a number of things one can do to improve the latter.  Many of these things have to do with communication, citizen training, and emergency kits. Being aware of those parts of one’s surroundings that would affect their safety is critical, such as limited-access roads. Not all citizens are equally able to respond to emergencies.  Responder's would benefit from advance knowledge of these citizens and their limitations.
